Le château d’eau de la rue Marconi a été construit
en 1904 par deux frères ingénieurs-constructeurs gantois :
les Grondel. À l’époque, la Compagnie Intercommunale
des Eaux de l’agglomération Bruxelloise sentit le besoin de
doter ce quartier d’un système de distribution d’eau.
En effet, les décennies précédentes avaient vu le quartier
se métamorphoser en une véritable enclave industrielle dépendant
de plusieurs axes importants comme la chaussée d’Alsemberg
et l’avenue Molière. Les petites infrastructures industrielles
traitant toutes sortes de matériau, la rapide augmentation de la
population locale de 1900 à 1910, l’implantation de la prison
de Saint-Gilles sont autant de facteurs qui ont finalement accéléré
la construction du château d’eau.
