La construction suit le type « E » du système de classification
développé par François Hennebique qui déposa
à la fin des années 1880 un brevet lui garantissant le monopole
des vertus du béton renforcé. C’est d’ailleurs
selon ce même brevet que les ingénieurs gantois ont conçu
la cuve et les structures du château d’eau. Ce château
d’eau prend ses fonctions en 1905, date à partir de laquelle
il distribuera plusieurs millions de litres d’eau chaque année.
C’est en 1934 que la Compagnie des Eaux de Bruxelles stoppe subitement
l’activité du château d’eau pour des raisons qui
sont encore à clarifier même si il semblerait que le ralentissement
de l’activité industrielle locale en soit la plus probable
d’entre elles.
